In the framework of a programme dedicated to “Promoting Respect for Media Freedom and to End Impunity in Eastern Africa”, the Eastern African Journalists Association (EAJA) is seeking to recruit a PRESS FREEDOM COORDINATOR.
JOB DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESS FREEDOM COORDINATOR (PFC)
Under the guidance of EAJA Secretary General, he/she will work as EAJA staff, in collaboration with the IFJ Africa Office and EAJA’s national affiliates in East African countries. As a National of one of Eastern African countries, the Press Freedom Coordinator will be expected to undertake the following responsibilities:
1- To monitor violations of media freedom and the right to free expression
2- To expose the violations with the aim to galvanise support from national, regional and international organisations
3- To advocate and campaign for media freedom and freedom of expression in the region
4- To manage a network of National PF Coordinators who will collect information to forward to the PFC to issue alerts.
COMPETENCES AND SKILLS
Qualification and background:
* Senior Level Journalist/Human Rights Advocate At least 5 years of experience in Press Freedom Advocacy
*Confirmed experience in Press Freedom Alerts writing and disseminating Good knowledge of the Eastern African media context Experience in research methodology, and conducting surveys; Experience in training journalists
Skills:
Excellent speaking and writing skills in English and good usage of French; Easy use of the Office software and Internet. Easy skills of adaptation; Leadership, autonomy and ability of working under pressure; Dynamism, rigour and organization; Respect of agreements and deadlines.

EAJA campaigns to promote freedom of expression, and to protect and promote the rights and interests of journalists and other media workers throughout the region. The programme is being implemented with the support of the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) and the Africa Regional Office of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).
